Are you planning a trip to Oregon’s wine country and wondering how to bring home some of the exquisite Oregon wine you’ll discover? In this article, we’ll explore a few options to help you safely transport your wine back home.

Oregon’s wine is celebrated worldwide for its distinctive flavors and unique characteristics, which stem from the state’s diverse soil and ideal growing conditions. The Willamette Valley AVA, in particular, shares geographical similarities with Burgundy, France, and has gained acclaim for producing outstanding Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. With nearly one thousand wineries, Oregon offers an unparalleled wine experience. As you explore the state’s vineyards, we hope you leave with a taste of Oregon that will last until your next visit.

Option 1: Flying with Alaska Airlines

Are you flying with Alaska Airlines? You’re in luck! With their “Wine Flies Free” program, you can check a case of wine as luggage at no extra cost. To take advantage of this perk, ensure your wine is securely packed in a case or box with appropriate packing materials, such as Styrofoam, cardboard liners, or bubble wrap. At the airport, simply check your box like any other piece of luggage. A helpful tip: Alaska Airlines considers a case of wine to be a single box or case containing up to 12 bottles and weighing 50 lbs or less.

Option 2: Shipping Your Wine

Shipping wine used to be a challenge due to the complex laws surrounding alcohol transportation, and it’s still illegal to send it through USPS. However, there are now many services available to help you ship wine home safely. For instance, Newberg Mail Room in wine country and PostalAnnex+ in the city offer shipping services that comply with all regulations. These companies can guide you through the process, ensuring your wine arrives safely and legally.

Option 3: Purchasing Wine Before Your Flight

As a wine enthusiast, you probably know that Capers is one of the largest curators of Oregon-grown wines. With a collection of thousands of bottles in our private cellar and a wide selection on our store shelves, we have something for every palate. The best part about buying from Capers is that you’re already past TSA security. This means you can conveniently carry your wine purchases on the plane as part of your carry-on luggage, making it easy to take a few bottles home with you.

At the end of August 2024, you’ll be able to visit our new location in the newly renovated PDX terminal. Capers Bistro will feature our most extensive menu yet, along with a wide selection of bottles available for purchase—enough to fill your bags to the brim! Be sure to check the map to find our new spot.

No matter how you choose to transport your wine, we hope these options help you bring a piece of Oregon’s rich wine culture back with you. From the lush vineyards of the Willamette Valley to the convenience of Capers, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy and share Oregon’s finest wines. Cheers to your journey and the delicious memories you’ll make along the way!
